By the time the last box arrives, you may have very little interest in opening twenty more. A first-evening bag gives you a small landing place while the rest of the home is still packed.
Think in moments. What will you want when you arrive, when you eat, when you get ready for bed, and when you wake up?
Start with a change of clothes, toiletries, towels, bedding, phone chargers, water, and a few easy snacks. Add toilet paper, soap, a bin bag, and anything you use every day. Keep your regular medication and personal essentials with you.
If you’re moving with children or pets, include the familiar items that help their routine feel recognisable. A favourite book or the usual food bowl can be more useful that evening than a perfectly unpacked room.
Keep keys, important documents, and the contact details you may need in an accessible, secure place. Choose a bag or clearly marked box that travels with you, and let anyone helping know where it belongs.
You don’t need to unpack the whole kitchen or finish every bedroom. Aim for somewhere to sleep, a way to wash up, and the basics for the morning. The rest can wait its turn.
